What Makes an Outdoor Speaker?

Outdoor speakers are engineered very differently from indoor models. They use UV-stabilized plastic or aluminum cabinets that won't yellow or crack in sunlight, sealed driver assemblies, brass or stainless hardware that resists corrosion, and rubber surrounds tested for moisture and temperature cycling. The Polk Atrium series, for instance, carries an IP weather rating that lets it survive direct rain and humidity that would destroy a conventional bookshelf speaker within a season.

How to Choose Outdoor Speakers

Three things to think about: coverage area, mounting, and amplification. For coverage, larger speakers (like the Polk Atrium 6) project further and are better for big yards or pool decks; smaller models (Atrium 4) are right-sized for patios and balconies. For mounting, look for swivel brackets that let you aim the speakers toward the listening area without cutting them off the wall to adjust. For amplification, you'll need either an outdoor-rated zone amplifier or an AV receiver with a Zone 2 output that you wire out to the patio.
